Using a Allan and Heath mixwizzard3 16:2  board for live sound and using the direct outs into Tascam dr70d (I'm only recording 3 tracks)
I'm getting loud distortion peaks where the program may be -15db but I'm getting glitches from -3 up to peak VU,
Very strange, I did not use balanced cables, just 1/4" mono cables, could that explain the distortion peaks?

Here is the screen shot of a whole 3-track song loaded in Audacity.
And the 2nd screen shot is zoomed in on the first glitch in the top track. A very loud pop.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

I take it that you did not hear the pop coming from the board's main outputs or headphone output.

Is the recorder set to line input and the phantom power turned off?

How long are the cables your using?

Looking at your waveforms it looks suspiciously like digital glitches.  As you are not feeding digitally it could be that you are having problems with your memory cards.
