 While checking on the PCB style trans-ceiver units for a project, I decided to play with my dongles.
I have 2 Chinese dongle transmitters and 8 or so receiver dongles (button style).
This what I found. 
The transmitters (with antenna) also receive. 
The button style receivers will not transmit.
A fixture can receive dmx signal from Male or female side as long as a physical connection can be made, with a turn around (for example).
If a fixture has an input from a wireless source, a transmitter can't be used as a repeater on the output to other fixtures on the same wireless channel (color).
But, one can repeat if on a different channel (color).

Maybe that will help someone.

Correct.

The pcb types are either.  If they detect dmx they automatically transmit.  If they don't, they scan for a wireless signal.

The least fun thing about the transceivers is the ability of something you considered to be a receiver to become a transmitter.  Someone cycling through the fixtures settings can trigger this.

So adding these to some of my fixtures would create a wireless network of their own also.

But being able to add some of these to permanent installs would be cool.

Rob is correct.  But you could set up a "red channel" as level 1.  Red transmit to red receive on a fixture (or fixture) within range.  That same fixture, with a "Green" transmitter on the output, could transmit to a slew of Green receivers that were out of range of the red transmitter.  rinse and repeat.

I am not sure that the output is properly differential RS485.  I suspect that they only apply signal to one pin.
