Wireless DMX (weather proofing idea)
« on: April 18, 2019, 12:01:29 PM »

Would this work?  Take a dongle, plug in the power plug, and attach a jumper cable.
Dip, or other wise coat, it in silicone passed the XLR.  Provide a means of shade or cover to reduce direct sun radiation...
Would it survive, long term in the elements?  If condensation from temp variations is a thing, would a desiccant pack on the dongle resolve that?
Which would survive longer, the dongle or the dongles PS?

Doubtful either would last for very long. It takes more than a little silastic schmoo to weatherproof something that wasn't originally designed to be, especially where wall warts are concerned.

What's the application your going after, here?

1) Do it right
2) Do it over until you do it right

An outdoor lighting one.   ;D ;D ;D

Would like to avoid burying signal runs to 2 positions and up a 2-story building and the over another 1/2 story rise to the other side of said building.  Either have to do a lot of back tracking or employ a splitter.  At least a 2-way.  Maybe a 3-way.  A single loop run is just not feasible.  A wireless solution saves a ton of labor, but cost me a lot of money.   8)

I would just put it in a weatherproof plastic enclosure.

To test, get a small one and put the lid (a part without embedded metal) in the microwave for 20 seconds.

If the plastic doesn't heat up, it is relatively transparent at 2.4GHz.

I have my Christmas lighting controller in one of these. It works well. No problem with radio signals with Donner wireless DMX units.

This pic is of the controller that runs my year round outside lighting. Walkway, accent lights, etc. It’s been outside for 4+ years without a problem.

Ed, If I lived closer by, I’d swing through the neighborhood and see what mayhem I could accomplish on that it ;-)

Hacking polling booths commerade ? Why bother when lighting is so much more fun ...

That is some class A info right there.   ;)
