Yamaha RIO Auto-Mute when in Refresh mode
« on: April 07, 2019, 03:28:28 PM »

Obviously I can avoid this "problem" by switching to Resume, but I'm curious if anyone knows the "proper" procedure to get a RIO that has muted itself to unmute if it's connected to a console and in Refresh mode?
I usually have to reboot the console, but I would think there would be an easier way. I know that adjusting the gain on a channel doesn't do it...

I presume you're referring to the outputs of the RIO muting?

The foolproof method i've used is to run RIO Remote on the computer i'm using for Dante Controller.  As soon as RIO Remote sees the Mic Pres, the RIO syncs and the outputs unmute.

I'm not sure this is the 'established' method.  but it always works.  :)

Thanks, Brian. Just looking for a simpler method using just the console if possible.

i don't think there is one.  I've attached a screenshot from the RIO manual, but Yamaha literally says the fix is "Start the Rio-native device to send the setting to the Rio".  That to me means turn on/restart the Console.  Or open RIO Remote which is also a RIO-native device.

I wonder if unplugging the CL5 from the RIO and reconnecting would work...

You can try it but i don't think so.  I think there is something that happens in the boot process with the CL5 where it looks for RIOs, and upon finding them sends them startup info.  I know the last time i had to deal with this issue, i unplugged and replugged the CL5 a bunch of time during troubleshooting and it never fixed it.

Admittedly, this is a weird problem for a company that nearly always makes sense...

Indeed. I wrote to my contact at Yamaha to see if I could get some clarity on this situation. I'll post once I hear back.

Pretty sure this was addressed in an early training session for CL5s and the explanation was that it was a hardware level 'safe' position that prevented any change in the status of the RIO from any external device  I could be entirely wrong of course my memory being what it is but it seems to awaken a slight neural vibration.

Yes, the purpose is to make sure that the outputs stay muted until it receives the go-ahead from a compatible device WHEN IN REFRESH MODE.
What seems to happen is after a period of time, the RIO decides that a compatible device is not connected, and it then remains muted even after a compatible device is connected.
I’m trying to determine how to get the RIO to start looking again.
Power cycling the RIO or Console seems to do it, as well as connecting a laptop running R-Remote.
Like to find if there’s a faster way without doing any of those things.
