Many in the industry are familiar with the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act, passed by Congress in 2012, which mandates repurposing the critical 470 – 512 MHz (T-band) spectrum for consumer-based uses following an FCC auction.

Notably, the act failed to recognize business enterprises that also occupy the T-band.

Such as TV channels 14-20?  This is definitely weird.

The answer is one of uncertainty due to several factors, starting with the very misguided manner in which the section of the Act concerning T-Band was written (by those who did not understand the nature of LMR operations in that band).

The [really] short answer is it's not at all certain there will in fact be a T-Band auction by 2021 as mandated by the Act. There are both significant objections by public safety, along with their districts' elected representatives, and an apparent disinterest by any of the presumed bidders.

Stayed tuned . . .
