812 foh
« on: March 25, 2019, 09:52:45 AM »

Have a gig that room holds about 375. Generally I bring my 725s over 728s, however parking is extremely limited in area making it difficult to bring trailer. Was looking at possibly running SRX 812s and position them up high, over SRX 828. Has anyone had success with 812s in similar situation? It's 80s tribute bands.

I enjoy the horn dispersion angles on single 12's and 15's - better dance floor coverage - so I tend to choose those over subs instead of 3 way boxes.
When I use my SRX system for outside or larger (by my standards) indoor venues, utilizing 1 x SRX812(or 815) over 1 x SRX828 one side and over 2x SRX818's the other, I find the system to be very well balanced and in fact I still have to reduce the top speaker gains down a little to match. I prefer to cluster the subs in the middle but this isn't always possible.
I do make sure to get the tops up nice and high.

Thanks Deb,

Ceilings are pretty high. I usually get them up pretty high and angle down.

The amp went out in one of my VP's so I borrowed an SRX812 from a friend to get me through the night.

I was very impressed. Not a VP, but did a great job.

About 500 outdoors. Journey tribute band

Add: It didn't get all the way to the back, but it was plenty for the dance floor plus another 30ft or so.

With the height I'm able to get with 812s, don't think 725s would do much better in relation to throw. At least I hope. LOL.

Decided to take 725s. Only issue is I'm going to be using 4 subs and may need to mix 2 828s with 2 728s. I have 6 728s and 2 828s. Could take 4 728s but would need to move things around, but will do it if need be. Would the 828s and 728s work well together? Thanks!

The maximum output of the 812s would be quite a bit less than the 725's. However, depending on your needs, the smaller cabinets may work just fine.  For a group of 375 with pre-recorded music, I wouldn't give it a second thought.  With live music, that would be the very upper size crowd I'd consider, although, like you did, I'd use the larger cabinets.

As far as mixing 728s with 828s, they are similar, but not identical cabinets.  Coupling will be inconsistent compared to using matching boxes.  Will it work? Probably.  Would 4 matching cabinets be a better choice?  Definitely.
