Today I tried to play back 8 tracks of audio through Digicos UB MADI interface into a SD11. It was crackling. After a few seconds, it started crackling. It wasn't digitally distorted sort of, or lagging, but just crackling. Sounded terrible. I have zero experience with this and couldn't find any good info about why this is happening.

I have a laptop with 4GB ram and an i3, running Nuendo Live. It's not a very solid rig, but it should do eights tracks. The FW of the SD11 is old, it's the 760 FW.

I've played back far more tracks through Dante without a problem. Muting 7 of the 8 tracks didn't help. It seems like the cracking was triggered by the input level actually when I think of it. But it could as well be a coincidence with "after a few seconds".

You tried rebooting and unplug/re-plugging the USB connection?  I've found the UB-MADI to be flaky on occasion but usually that's a situation where it just disappears.

Also, is it possible you've got clock issues going on?  If you're not getting your audio clock from the UB-MADI then you're going to have a clock mis-match which could be what you're hearing.

If i had to put money on it, i would bet on a clock issue.

Yes I tried that. Aha. I'll check where Nuendo gets the clock from next time.

Did it happen to be really, really hot where you were? On the tour I did last summer (all stadiums) we hit some really stinking hot days. On some of those days, if the Macs were really hot, playing tracks would come out as crackling sounds. Cooling them down would fix the problem. Just to give you an idea how hot it was, my 2015 MBP would bog down to being basically non-functional while running WWB, WSM, Invisible Waves and IAS on Parallels. I actually had to have one of the air conditioning hoses for the tent directly on the computer to keep it going.

It was "normal" indoor temperature, but thanks for the heads up :)

I can't fint anything about clock settings on the PC.

I'm running windows 10. Yesterday I read that UB MADI and PC isn't the greatest match. Is this correct?

I’m not familiar with Nuendo but I’ve never worked with a DAW that didn’t have clock settings somewhere.

UBMadi should be just fine for what you’re doing.

Right. I believe maybe the setting I'm looking for is behind a button which doesn't do anything when I'm using the UB Madi. Settings or something for the driver.

I did a new recording the other day and found out it was the first recording itself which was crackling. The second seemed fine, untiI fast forward to act 2, crackling again. Cant my comp handle 130 minutes of 8 tracks? Seems strange.

Well, that depends. An i3 cpu with 4GB of RAM is pretty light weight nowadays. What else were you running on the laptop. And were you trying to record to and playback from the system drive?

Only Sennheiser WSM,  and did only recording. Nuendo was running minimized while i had WSM on the screen. My guess is that nuendo/windows wouldnt be so dumb to give nuendo less resources as its active, but in the background...but I dont know. Did another recording today with nuendo as the focused window fullscreen. Will listen to it when i have the time.

Listened through some parts of tonights recording. No crackling.

My mistake when it comes to troubleshooting is that I changed two things tonight. I had Nuendo as the active window, and also stopped the recording during the intermission and started it again for act 2.

Hmm...that’s a touch call. I know Protools will keep running fine if you change focus to another window. I haven’t worked with Nuendo Live enough to know if that will affect it or not. I would say to do some more testing, try it both ways and see if you can replicate the problem.

I have seen this behaviour from Macs on very hot outdoor summer days. (think 100 degrees)
The act in question had a very solid relationship with Apple. The story they got from their tech guy was that above a certain ambient temperature, all bets are off as the solder points on the data path to the hard drive start to soften and become unreliable.

A cooling base with fans under the laptops made things usable on the extreme heat days.
