CP Beam vs PWS Helical
« on: February 26, 2019, 09:54:17 pm »

About to purchase a helical antenna for my IEM setup.

I believe both are well regarded by Jason and used by his company for some big shows.

The way I see it is:

RF Venue CP Beam:
-expensive
-compact
-durable

PWS Helical:
-cheaper
-higher gain
-large, hard to store

Are there any issues with durability with the CP Beam due to collapsing and storing (eg. the repeated motion causing stress on the metal antenna parts?)
Anything else to know?
Basically, it comes down to price vs ease of transport I think?

From a purely subjective point of view, I've found the CP Beam to be superior in performance to both the PWS Helical and also the Sennheiser A5000-CP, and it would always be my first choice for that reason. The ease of transportation is a bonus. I've toured CP Beams extensively and never had an issue with durability due to repeated load-outs.

I've never had to pay for one though!

FWIW the CP Beam really requires a 3 space drawer, it doesn't fit well in a two space.

Thanks guys!

That's actually exactly what I was after, some real-world use that says "I like the CP Beam" ;)

And what drawer size it fits in!

I can get the CP Beam through my distributor for a very good price, so I'll go with that :)

Thanks again!

Followup question:

What kind of stands do y'all use with your RF antenna?

Maybe the Pyle PMKS56 or Shure S15A?

K & M overhead mic stand. Model 20811.
Goes high enough when on the floor beside the stage in an arena.
Also some booms mounted on pipe clamps for mounting on truss, railings , etc.

I have a three pack of Manfrotto lighting stands that get above an arena stage when on the ground. They all clip together and with the additional bag makes a nice set. Had them a few years and they have served me well.

FWIW I'm a big fan of the PWS domed helical and the SKB case PWS had made for it.  It's not as compact as the CP Beam in terms of rack drawer storage, but the SKB case is nice and I always love having as many things as possible in a case I could throw in a lake and come back to a week later as it seems to always be raining these days...

Also FWIW I was able to get better pricing by going thru a Shure dealer and ordering it as a Shure part number than the price PWS was willing to give... Not a single marking on it that says Shure (in fact it does say Professional Wireless) but Shure sells model HA-8091 which is clearly the same item.
