With a differential setup I clip the scope probe ground leads together and to a ground reference on the amplifier, such as pin 3 of the input.

I think you mean pin 1.

You are correct. Thanks. They say at my age it doesn't get better. -F

Just a quick note to share this: http://www.powersoft-audio.com/en/docman/804-how-to-setup-limiters/file

Which is Powersoft's paper on amplifier limiting. Might be useful.

Thanks for this. I've relied on Powersoft's guidance found in the amp user manuals for attack and release times based on  type and size of driver. This article appears to show how those numbers were derived. I look forward to reading it in detail. -F

Yikes, no! If you reverse polarity in this situation you'll short the output of the amp through the grounded side of the scope probe and the safety grounds on the scope and amplifier AC power connections. Hopefully the amp goes into shutdown before something lets out the magic smoke. That's why you gotta watch this.

Thanks. This is why I'm asking. Still learning about the design of some of these things. I had assumed that the output of the amp had a high "+" and low "-" side to the signal, not a signal and ground reference.

After many years of operating the system, I want to learn more about the why things work the way they do, and with a little help from you guys and some luck, learn without letting out the magic smoke.
