Snare Microphone
« on: January 28, 2019, 10:43:26 PM »

I did a search and it seems all the topics are pretty old.  What's everyone using for a snare mic? What do you recommend?  My band is Motown, Soul and some Rock.

Still using an SM57 after all these years. Occasionally a Beta 57 if it needs more high end snap. The Audix i5 seems to get some love, I haven’t tried one.

They’re all fine.  It’s more about the snare itself and the tuning.

But- my fav is md421, atm25, beta57, e604, sm57.  In that order.

AKG D1000e.  My classic favorite.  No, not for sale.

Shure SM57 or Beta57a if I need durability.

Beyer M201 if the drummer is worthy.

M201, MD441 or 2011c over, 2011c under.
Sometimes 4099 if it's a tight setup.

B98 on top (sometimes e904, b87, 57)
E604 on bottom. (Sometimes b57 on side)

Really it's the tuning & setup more than mic.
Get moon gells. They are the absolute best thing to make drums not ring (besides proper tuning).

E/V ND-408 on top, 57 on bottom on bigger rooms and outdoor stages.
Drum tuning matters, as does mic placement.

Ya, Whatever. Just throw a '57 on it, and get off my stage.

I use either a 57 or the I5. I like both and it depends on the snare drum which I choose. I tend to use the 57 with a warm, wood snare and the I5 with a snare that has more 'crack' to start with like a steel one. The 2 mics are very close in sound but the I5 is bit less forward than the 57.
