Mac Mini and Logic hesitates on play
« on: December 05, 2019, 07:35:57 AM »

Running a 2018 Mac mini with Logic-and 8 audio tracks-shouldn't be working it hard.  It has been hesitating for 4-5 seconds when I hit play-not every time, but often enough to be a problem for my use.  It seems to be worse when it sits 4-5 minutes without playing.  Last night, one event resulted in a "Disk Overload Error".

Project is running from an external USB-C drive.  Nothing else is running.  This computer has been doing this from time to time running Propresenter as well-takes a few second to call up a slide.

The OS drive is a 250 G SSD-but only has 12 G free-which is a problem I am going to try to address today.  Any other thoughts?  It's like something is going to sleep and has to wake up.

What OS Version?  What logic version?  What other apps are running that may not be immediately obvious - things like Dropbox, teamviewer, antivirus etc?

Based on the error you're receiving and the fact that you're using an SSD leads me to think that your low disk space could very well be the culprit. As an SSD gets more and more full it's performance decreases because of how chunks of data have to be stored (a drive has numerous blocks of data that are subdividied, but the controller can't write to a given block if even one of those subdivisions are in use, it's an all-or-nothing type deal).

General rule of thumb is to keep SSDs at 70% full or less, so clear out some space and see if that solves it. Good thing is that SSDs are stupid cheap right now, so upgrading certainly won't break the bank.

Running a HD at less than 10% can cause problems.

But the other issue could be your buffer size. If you're running it low, try increasing the buffer size. That should fix your disk errors.

What audio interface are you running? Make sure you're running the right firmware for your OS version

We cleaned off the hard drive-it's now at about about 65% full (100G free).

The audio interface is a QU-32 mixer-USB connected.

I deselected the option to "allow hard drives to sleep when possible".  Still acts like a hard drive has to wake up because it always happens when the iMac has been sitting idle for some time.  Makes me wonder if the checkbox just exists to make you feel like you really have options.

I thought that was only true for elections. . .

....

Not to ask the obvious, but did you empty the trashcan once you deleted everything?  That one has bit me a few times...

I didn't do the deleting-I let pastor do that so it's not my fault if something important is missing  ;) ;, however, the 100G free comes from the "about this mac" so I assume it is actually free space?  Or is that a bad assumption?
