Winter Maintenance, latches, castors, cables, oh my
« on: January 16, 2019, 11:30:45 AM »

Hello Group.

It's that time of year when I go through everything and with the advent of digital,  the list of things to fix has gotten shorter.  Yippee.  So after cleaning the consoles and amps and reviewing things like mic cables, snakes, racks. On what other problem areas should I be concentrating?   I'm going over the wireless battery compartments, and the few pieces of outboard gear I have left. Give me some ideas, because we've got a bunch of snow and ice coming and I'll need something to keep me from going stir crazy. I mean I can only plow the driveway so many times.

Scott, I always like to use this time to start getting ready for the season, March - November.  But another good use of time, I feel, is reviewing technical videos on mixers, SMAART, wiring etc.

Bill Yes, that's my real name too. Well really, it is really Carl William.

All those vocal mic windscreen balls in a bucket of hot, soapy water for a few hours. I use an ultrasonic cleaner.  It impresses the hell out of the crew to see what comes out with the cleaning solution at the end.

Make sure you are up to date on all firmware for those back-saving digital devices, and ditto on any control software you might be using.  Also your wifi routers, make sure those are up to date.

If you use UPS's, do real drain tests on them to verify they'll make it through the next season.

This is also a great time to rethink organization.  Are all your cases where you need them to be, when you need them?  Or, do you have to move several others to get at them?  Do you have the right stuff in each case?

And, don't forget vehicle maintenance...

If you're looking at castors, hopefully you're also looking at the nuts n' bolts that hold them on, too. Used to drive me crazy, walking around the shop and seeing 1/4-20 bolts half out of a caster board. And yes, I used both spellings of the word...up here in Poutinia, "castor" is French for "beaver"! :-[

If you are using passive speakers (and depending on the type of speaker cables you use), you may want to remove the ends of the speaker cables and check for oxidation on the copper.  If you see oxidation (blue-ish/dark color) on the copper, cut the bad stuff off (down to the clean copper), and then re-attach the ends.

We check our speaker cables every year.  About every other year, we end up cutting off about 1" of cable (on at least one speaker cable) and rewiring with clean copper.
