A dipole(half wave) is a far better antenna design than a ground plane(quarter wave) specially when the ground plane cannot be guaranteed. As far as I know the half wave and quarter wave should have very similar gain, I doubt he wants to replace the antenna due to needing more gain.

You will likely get better reception with the half wave antenna than with the quarter wave purely due to physics.

the EV wireless receivers use a screw on version of the BNC connector not the twist lock version that most everyone else uses

And they do and this is most annoying.
