Radial Pro AV DI boxes
« on: January 02, 2019, 06:45:37 PM »

I am needing to take left & right 1/4" outputs from a console, and convert to a single 1/8" stereo connection.  I see the Radial Pro AV2 DI box has two 1/4" L & R inputs... However the single 1/8" stereo jack is also on the "input" side of the box.  If I connect the L & R 1/4" inputs, with the 1/8" stereo jack act as an output, and also keep the stereo image of the audio and not sum them together into mono?

Why not use a simple adaptor cable and avoid the DI all together?

Those 1/4 and 1/8 input jacks will simply be wired in parallel so using them as you suggest is electrically the same as using an insert cable, which is to say using that DI isn't buying you anything here.

I have taken the output of my console, XLR and using a gender adapter, connected it to the ProAV2 to get either 1/8 stereo or RCA output. That way you get the benefit of the transformer and ground lift if needed. Works fine. Usually it’s from and aux or matrix to feed video or tie into a house “system”, where I want the isolation.

Get one of these.....

It will take either XLR or 1/4 inch line level inputs and give you an isolated 1/8 inch mic level output. (I assume you need to connect to a 1/8 inch mic input on something)

Agree, a cable is the simplest solution.

That's what I do.  Make up a lead with a couple of 1K summing resistors.

Yes, although it will not be an isolated output, as others have mentioned.  If you already own the DI, give it a try - it’s probably fine.  If you are shopping for something, look at Mike’s solution instead.

I have used DI's in reverse with a few adapters, it works.

I do like some isolation between someones computer input and more so a camera's mic input, even some of the basic camcorder's 1/8 inch mic inputs have some phantom power on them.
