2019 - Musicians and celebrities passing
« on: January 02, 2019, 01:00:44 PM »

RIP Ray "Dr. Hook" Sawyer.  He was 81.

Perhaps best known for "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and "Sylvia's Mother", I remember him for his covers of Shel Silverstien's "Freaking at the Freaker's Ball" and "I Got Stoned and I Missed It."

Worked with them several times here in the mid-west.  Always a good time.

RIP Ray.

2019 says goodbye to Alan R. Perlman , founder of ARP instruments whose products like the Odyssey, 2600, PRO Soloist, Quadra and the Solina String Ensemble (designed by Eminent) were instrumental in the birth of electronic music and synthesizers in other popular music. Tony Banks, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre and Joy Division were just some famous users of ARP equipment.

"Sylvia's Mother"

A poignant song for those of us who toured during the days of Pay Phones and Long Distance Fees.  Not sure the lyrics would "ring" the same if introduced today.

Broadway and film actress Carol Channing passed yesterday, age 97...  Great quote from her:

“I’ll never forget it, because it came over me so strongly,” Channing recalled the feeling of stepping into a theater for the first time. “This is a temple. This is a cathedral. It’s a mosque ... This is for people who have gotten a glimpse of creation and all they do is recreate it. I stood there and wanted to kiss the floorboards.”

RIP, Dolly.

That is a great quote!  She had a great run.

We say goodbye to a jazz/soul great today James Ingram passed at 66.  Too young.

He performed in 1983 at a Jazz Festival in Ft. Lauderdale sponsored by pioneering Smooth Jazz format station WLVE.  Patti Austin played with James and solo.
