Correct-but the OP was only running a small water treatment control-so 40 watts is reasonable.  Very quickly it would make more sense to purchase a 240 volt "appliance".

40va means a limit of 40 watts, right?  Barely enough for a small light bulb.  Transtormers of sufficient size are, well, yikes.

Yes, the one for our "bath spa" (a device that sits on the side of the bath to create a "spa" action) is about the size of a brick and is only 12V 4A.

It's against code, only bond neutral/ground at service entrance.  May also be dangerous, and introduces ground loops. 

Oh, and the worms.  Think of the poor toasty worms.

Why N. Tesla created step down transformers.
