dimmer questions
« on: November 29, 2018, 01:20:30 PM »

I have some Blizzard TOURnado WW COB 60w LED lights that I use to light my stage. We hang them on a truss and use 8-12 per show. Networking all of them to run to a controller is possible but cumbersome when all I need is to fade them in and out. There are consumer grade dimmers that you can plug light strings into to control string lights. Is there something similar that I could use for my purpose? It would need to accommodate 720 watts and be outdoor rated. (I have traditional NSI 4600 dimmer packs and controller but assume these wouldn't be compatible with LEDs?)

Thanks in advance for any insight!

If the question is if You can get a dimmer to dimm the fixtures, without even worked with the fixtures, the answer is no. There's only possible to controll lights like this with DMX.

Wireless DMX modules, assuming these fixtures are DMX controlled.

Nope, can't dim with AC lines on these...has to be DMX.

The suggestion to use wireless DMX is a great one for ease of setup. Remember that you only need a transmitter module at your DMX controller and a receiver at the first fixture, then use real DMX cable to daisy-chain all the other fixtures to the first one.

But can this really be relied on in an outdoor pro setting? I’d be more interested in this:

as I’m trying to avoid the daisy chaining. Does this stuff actually work reliably?

We’ve been using the Donner units for about a year now, on the road every weekend, 2 different venues every weekend.

Other than self inflicted WiFi coordinating issues, they have worked flawlessly.  Huge time saver for us. Approx 28 fixtures total.

I have a new set that haven't seen fire yet, but several bands coming through the venue were using them with no problems. And we weren't exactly the cleanest wifi environment.

Same here. I use 4 or 5 of the Donner units for this setup:

I currently run 4 trees of 4 to 6 led pars each and 2 trees of 3.  I use 6 of the dinner receivers and wire between the lights on a tree.  I ran them all last season and they were flawless.  The board and transmitter were most of a 150 duracat run out front on 5 of those.  I was pleasantly surp4ised.

Getting back to the original question, while the OP's lights cannot be powered by dimmed power, there are fixtures that can such as ETC's Source 4WRD:

http://www.etcconnect.com/Products/Lighting-Fixtures/Source-4WRD/

The advice in this thread is likely a better fit for the OP, but thought I would point this out.

ip65 all weather and out side.  The donners your asking about are not up to the weather and moisture.  So the cables on the units and the DMX is the best answer for the weather because the DMX connectors on the units have water tight connections.
