Often, I will just use one of my passive DIs (JDI or ProDI) with some gender benders.

I've done exactly this and had positive results.

The only issue I've ever had with something like this was when I combined the backfed DI signal with another channel containing some of the same material. (ie a mic split with an all vocals aux)
Something in the chain reversed the polarity of 1 and so when re-combined there was some cancelling.
Don't know if it was the DI that reversed the polarity.
It was a very unusual case that I doubt most sane people will ever encounter
