Using keyboard amp as monitor
« on: November 05, 2018, 09:33:00 AM »

Sorry, second thread on first day.

Our keyboard player has this massive Peavey KB/A 100 keyboard amp https://assets.peavey.com/literature/manuals/kba100.pdf that they would like to use as a monitor, not only for the keyboard but for whatever monitor mix I want to use.

So my thinking was
- Running everything from on stage to my mixer (Soundcraft MTK12).
- Full mix goes to Master L and R from my mixer to FOH speakers
- Send specific channels using Aux1 to the Peavey amp, I'd need to convert the balanced TRS output of Aux1 to XLR to go over my snake back to the stage.

What I'm uncertain of though is:
The keyboard amp appears to have a line level input on channel 2, but I doubt it's for TRS balanced. Most likely unbalanced TS.

This doesn't seem like it would be ideal to just go Mixer > TRS to XLR > Snake Audio Sends > XLR to TRS > Peavey Amp.

I could just have a DI box with a through from the keyboard, one going to the Peavey and one the balanced out of the DI coming to my desk - but then I wouldn't be able to send a monitor mix to the amp, and the pianist can make the Peavey louder and I won't be able to bring it down from my mixer.

Some passive DI boxes can be used backwards.

Mixer Aux out -> Balanced XLR -> DI output -> DI input -> unbalanced TS -> keyboard amp line in.

Basically, you're using it as a balun. I've done this myself successfully.

Must be a passive DI; will not work with active DI.

Ok great thanks, I'll give that a try.
