FOH and MON communication
« on: November 03, 2018, 09:49:29 AM »

Hi,

Have National act coming up and need to be able to communicate from FOH to monitor tech. Normally in the venue I mix I generally I just handle monitors as well but brought another tech in for this event. Looking for something effective but not overly expensive. Suggestions on what will work? Thanks!

Rent a couple of intercom belt packs with handsets and a power supply.

Option B if you aren't worried much about privacy is a squawk rig - pair of powered monitors (Behringer B205d, Mackie, etc) and a pair of switched SM58s.  FOH mic into MON speaker, and vice versa.

+1. A mic onstage for the band to talk to FOH can be handy as well.

A couple small powered boxes work great for a shout system.  It can be as simple as a switched 58 running from FOH straight to the speaker in MON world (and vice versa) or you can route things through the desks with items like band PTT mics or other techs having access.  Super easy and very effective.

Radial stomp box or relay is great.  MONS or band members can discretely talk to whomever is routed.  Non-latching foot switches work best.  Band leader B feed input at Mons can be routed to IEM's at +6dB as well as FOH and Mons.

Routing your solo bus and shout lines between desks into a matrix and out to a cue wedge works good and is flexible.

I know this sounds crazy, but we actually used our cell phones recently on an outdoor event where we simply used the iPhone mic/headphones, with one of the ear buds in one ear, we setup a group text and used Siri to talk/text from FOH to Monitor land. Lol

It worked great.   ;D

Before you do this next time check out the virtual intercom app that Peter Erskine recommends.

Also this won't scale to a larger event. Wifi becomes rather spotty(although 5GHz might work fine) and with an even larger event you will start to see cell reception issues.

The entire show Live PD is produced on soft intercoms.

That includes the director back at the studio talking to the cameras on location, as well as all the on site crew comms.
