many bass cabs have been mic'd with a good ole 57.
At one time or another, EVERYTHING has been mic'd with a '57.
Is it the "best" ?
Not usually.
Does it present a workable sound ?
Absofukinloutely.
Give me a 5-piece pop or rock band, 3 or 4 '58's, and a dozen 57's, and you'll get a rokin show, on any system that actually works.
Now, i am much happier with MY mic kit, but that's not always in the cards.
Even on a briefcase gig, I'll bring 5 57's and a 58. Just in case.....
Chris.

Ya, Whatever. Just throw a '57 on it, and get off my stage.

I recently mic'd up an opener's kick drum with the trusty old 57 and it sounded great right out of the box. It took me way back to the good (bad?) old days when that's all I had to use and use it I did!

Earlier this summer I did 4 days of a very low budget folk dance festival with nothing but 57's & 58's.
Think I had clarinets, tin whistles, fiddles, bouzouki, acoustic guitar (without pickup, natch), double bass, accordions and bodhran all mic'd with those (not all at the same time to be fair) and exactly as you say - absolutely workable.

One time at a little gig the stage was all mic'd up and a guy showed up with an extra bass amp. All I had left was an I5, so I put that on.

The kick-ass bass sound was amazing, and I've chosen to use the I5 as my first call mic for basses ever since. Very good luck with it.

YMMV, of course.

He was at the same festival as me, when I had to slip over to do a quick mix on the side stage, only to find a full line of Shure brothers unispheres.

It is possible to take the retro thing to far.

Where does Tim fit into this story, basically he doesn't, but he was there.

+1 on a 906.
A good number of xlr outs on bass amps aren't so good.
Better off with a DI in line.

In addition to an amps questionable line out some amps do not have a pre post EQ selector switch for the line out, in that case you may have to try to undue what the amps EQ is doing to make something workable in the mix.

This gig is long over but as general rule when not sure which option is best I usually go ahead and set up two options; each in their own channel and make my choice at sound check. Better to have two options available at sound check and quickly make the choice then  have to swap the set ups back and forth and waste the band's time.
