Shure 57 on bass cab- worst case
« on: October 06, 2018, 06:10:09 PM »

Hello Everybody,
Got a gig in a few hours - bass player has a Vintage Kustom K150 Bass/Guitar amp- it has a
"To Tape Recorder" 1/4 inch jack - I was thinking I could just plug this into a DI box and be good - Just wanted to see if anyone is familiar with this amp - I only have one Bass drum mic - all my other mics are 57's, 58's, I5's- If I had to use a sm57 - any experience shared would be appreiciated- Thanks

While I know nothing about this specific amp, another option is to take a DI singal from the bass guitar directly, before the singal goes into the amp.

You have multiple options to do this... I prefer having the chain be guitar>DI>amp.
Please connect the amp to the parallel out jack connection on the DI, this might make sense to you but I recently found out not everybody seems to think this way.

Option 2 is going at it with your sm57. If you get it close you'll be getting lots of proximity boost helping the bass response of the mic. Mic placement is key here.

The sm57 is truly a workhorse mic, you can point it at almost anything and get a reasonable/likeable sound.

If after micing eeverything else all you've got left is a 58. Use that, its basically a "57-with-a-windscreen"

No opinion on the i5 though hearsay suggest you're better off using this on snare or guitar to free up a 57 if neccesary

I have had very good luck with Beta58's on bass cabs.  Not my first choice, but definitely my go to when the standard choices are gone.

I would plug the output of the bass gtr into a DI box and then take the parallel out of the DI into the input of the bass amp. You get much less hiss this way! Often the output of a bass amp is very hissy.

If they have effects pedals, get them to plug the bass directly in to it/them and then take the output of that and plug to a DI box and then do the parallel output to the bass amp input.

If you don’t have a DI box or a spare one at least, then yes use the sm57.

In general, stay away from any bass drum mics on a bass cab, they are usually too pre-eq'd for that application. A pair of notable exceptions is RE20 and M88.

My go-to mic for bass cabs these days are e906, I usually find them too bright on guitar but like them on bass cabs and floor toms.

For me - I don't care for the "flat" sound of a DI box only, if the amp sounds great.  If time I'd rather test XLR out of the amp (if possible) or other way to get the tone.

Radial Firefly is fun
