Anybody know what these vocal mics are in this video?  Kudos to the NPR folks for a sweet mix, IMO!

It seems to be quite a fat mic. The XLR body looks small compared to the mic body. It might be a Sennheiser MKH-60. There are no good shots of it.

They appear to be NPR's microphones as they appear in some of the other TDC videos.  There are some that show the mic without a wind screen.  I can't tell but. this video seems to feature them  with out the wind screens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLRxO9AmNNo

Hi,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e07bI5rz6FY

He mentions the Sennheiser 418s, a stereo mic, the mono version would be a 416. My thought is that he's using an isolation mount that makes it appear fatter.

The part you're seeing looks like a shockmount clip from an ENG kit.

I think this is a good guess.

All i could think was the look on the audio guy's face when they said they were doing TOP at the Tiny Desk.  With multiple vocal mics.  "Are you kidding? Tower of Power? That's gonna be Crazy Loud.  The only way that would EVER work is if we used freakin' SHOTGUN mics for the Vocals..."    ;D

But you can see that they're not that loud.  Only Doc has a mic on his bari.  Everyone else is just playing into the room.  Gotta be some nice stereo mic on the desk somewhere picking up the horns because they sound pretty present.  DG is using rods and I'll bet Jerry and Marc are either direct or very small amps down on the floor.  Lot of folks to cram in there, along with Roger's chop and Leslie.  But none of them have anything to prove or egos that need to be loud.

Oh, i didn't think that there were necessarily the typical stage volume ego trip things happening here.  These guys are the very definition of Pros after all.  But even played "quietly" horns are loud.  Especially when they are played 3 feet away from a vocal mic.

I'm pretty impressed at what they were able to achieve.  It sounds great!
