Oh, i didn't think that there were necessarily the typical stage volume ego trip things happening here.  These guys are the very definition of Pros after all.  But even played "quietly" horns are loud.  Especially when they are played 3 feet away from a vocal mic.

I'm pretty impressed at what they were able to achieve.  It sounds great!

I was thinking that's why they put the singer up so high.

He mentions the Sennheiser 418s, a stereo mic, the mono version would be a 416. My thought is that he's using an isolation mount that makes it appear fatter.

In this link he lists the Sennheiser 416 in his travel kit. He does a great job on every tiny desk video I have heard.

The guys are holding back ALOT. I can tell just by the intensity and articulation they aren't playing anywhere near full out. You can also tell because Adolfo's face isn't turning red when he plays. I've been watching Adolfo play for over 20 years, since he was still in the Maynard Ferguson band. He's a screamer.


I'm not a pro saxophone play by any means, but even I can keep up with a Marshall half stack on my tenor, without a mic. I've done it before. It's all a matter of how much air you put through the horn and what your mouthpiece/reed combination is.

True that, if the director isn't telling the sax line to tone it back, you're not playing the chart right XD
I miss playing, I'd love to find a community group around here that doesn't take things so seriously and just has fun.

I've actually played with Tom a number of times, and he can play really powerfully.  Used to do the 2nd sax part on Pick Up The Pieces on guitar together with him and he can convey phrasing with his eyes like nobody else I've played with.  Also no problem hearing him when he turns away from the mic   
Great players have control and can produce at many dynamic levels.  DG can play in your living room, and then turn around and do a festival stage.
