I wanted to follow up and share our success story. First, thanks to Brian Hancock for his help. Here are some details on our successful setup.
Our setup until this point was:
- We run an X32 Compact to an SD8 over AES50.
- This runs from our production truck to our commentators location.
- Typically this is anywhere from 100-500ft away from the production truck.
- We have used Klark Teknik DN9610 to repeat our AES50 signal.
- We have several 300ft ethernet (ethercon) spools
We run several cameras and pull internet over a single fiber (12 strand) cable. The standard for this type of production is singlemode fiber which is what we use. Until now, we have had to run our fiber cable and then the AES50 cable. Now with the setup below we are able to run AES50 over our singlemode fiber. We have tested it at 1000ft, but should go much farther.
We recently purchased Klark Teknik DN9620 (for the second time, due to unsuccessfully doing this before) to try to get our AES50 over fiber. We had seen posts similar to Brian's about how you can make it work over singlemode fiber, however any information on how to do this was sparse.
In order to make singlemode work, you need to purchase the appropriate SFP (we chose bidirectional SFP so we only had to use a single fiber strand to carry AES50, but you don't have to) along with a singlemode jumper cable (LC to LC) that is as short as you can find (under 1ft).
Here are the SFP we purchased:
1000BASE-BX BiDi SFP 1550nm-TX/1310nm-RX
1000BASE-BX BiDi SFP 1310nm-TX/1550nm-RX
Both of these can be found at
fs.com and part numbers are 29892 and 29893
The DN9620 have a ton of screws to open their cases. We used a T8 screwdriver to do so. After opening the lid, you need to remove the multimode (LC to LC) jumper cable. Next, remove the multimode SFP that is in the unit from the factory. Insert one of the new SFP you ordered and then use the new singlemode LC to LC jumper cable to connect the new SFP to the jack on goes to the rear of the device (Neutrik connector).
Repeat those steps on the other DN9620 box and put the tops and screws back in. Finally, connect one box AES50 #1 to the X32, then connect the other box AES50 #1 to the SD8 or other stagebox. Then connect the singlemode fiber between the two boxes. Power on the units. Don't be discouraged by all the red lights, you have to get the clocks right before it will work as expected. In our tests we selected External AES50 on the box closest to the X32 and External Snake on the box at the stage box end.
Hope this helps others.
