Pots for my Paul
« on: September 21, 2018, 11:51:03 PM »

I plugged my 74 Les Paul in today for the first time in over ten years only to discover the volume pots need to be replaced. These are DiMarzios from the late 70s - sealed and cont be cleaned. Can someone give me a recommendation for replacements?

TIA

There should be a number on the pot, it may have solder on it if they soldered a ground to the pop case though, that woudl tell you the resistance and taper.
There most likely CTS brand pots, that's what most Dimarzio pots are from that era.

Do the pots have a metal cover on them with the three leads coming out from under it or are they a square plastic cased pot?

If there the metal can style you can usually squirt a little cleaner into the pot where the leads come out.
Use Caig Labs Fader cleaner / lube.

Ok I just looked up Dimarzio pots, all the usual places have them, Sweetwater, Musicians Friend, Guitar Center also check at Stewart MacDonald.

Split shaft for Les Paul press-on knobs, 500kohms for humbuckers - I'd replace with CTS.

Thanks for the recommendation. I Haven’t bought guitar parts in 30 years and don’t know current brands.

Or you can go to the source.

Regardless, don't buy cheap crap. Buy CTS pots and they'll last forever.

There was a time when people were "upgrading" guitars with things like Bournes pots.  Most have gone back to basic CTS as the parasitics are part of the sound we know and love.

It's all in the taper. Gibson has now started using 550K pots. Hmmmmm?
