the current version is much more streamlined and responsive, runs on both Mac and Windows, and has been out for about a year now. If you looked at RAD when it first came out, it's really worth another look. The product has come a long way since it was first released.

does it program on network

does it program on network?
No, it's still a USB from a laptop to the hardware.

Ok, so for someone looking to purchase a wireless COM system without breaking the bank, is the Unity Com system workable? I've used regular wireless COM for years, am quite familiar with how it works.
For those of you that have used the Unity, what would be the downsides. I understand that it's different, but is it disliked by people that are used to "regular" wireless COM?

actual software is not expensive but you need some hardware

1.  Needs a Mac server like mac mini
2.  network must have port 20101 and 20102 open if you are using unity connect
3.  Needs an ios or android phone.  Best one is Sonim XP8
4.  works most reliably on a cellular network, less so on wifi
5.  only 6 channels per phone but system can take in 64
6. can be operated with bluetooth pb
7. Unity sells lots of headsets for use with phones.
8. may need addl battery for phones - Sonim lasts all day

I have never heard that users do not like it compared to reg com - more often they are amazed
any specific questions?

Thanks, Peter.

Do you think I could get away with using a dedicated 2009 MBP running El Capitan?

My typical use-case is just adding 4-6 wireless COM to a wired system for SM/ASM use. 1-channel is all that's needed, but I'm wondering if folks used to using beltpacks would not like it? I would think that having to press a non-tactile "talk" button on a smartphone would not be workable in the dark, so the BT button would be a must, as would proper headsets.
The Sonim phone looks interesting, but if I were using them as the "packs" for the Unity, I wonder if I can get WiFi only versions?

I was thinking a way to interface from the Unity server to COM could be one of these devices from Studio Technologies. Soundcard and 4w to 2w interface all in one...

I guess I'm just trying to see if end users, when offered instead of a "normal" wireless COM pack, a smartphone with a headset and BT PTT would be disappointed.

any apple computer.  you still need to have a router with ports open.

dont think so - I have not been happy with unity on wifi.

maybe as long as the device looks like audio interfaces in the computer

there is a latency - 3-500 ms so they would complain about echo since they would be often adjacent.

any apple computer.

Not really. From Unitys web page: "NOTE : Older Macs using Core™2 Duo processors or older are NOT supported. ( 2007 - 2008 approximately )"

That's great info. Thanks, Pete!

One more question - can a client be used without a headset in a "walkie talkie" type mode?

Coming back to this a year later...

Is Crewcom still the best "bang for the buck" for a "traditional" system with dedicated hardware? (Same requirements: 4-6 wireless users on single channel, interfaceable into 2w com)
Just wondering if there's any new players I haven't heard about...
