You'll want to PM Mac a copy of your gov't issued ID showing "GT Hill" as your Real, Full Name. That'll solve the problem! Sorry if it's an issue, but we do pride ourselves here on the ProSoundWeb on not hiding behind any sort of pseudonym. If "GT" is short for something, you can always set your Display name as 'Gordon Thomas "GT" Hill' or whatever to show that.

Have fun, good luck!

Ray - Are you serious? I have to provide my full LEGAL name and an ID? GT is short for something. But its all I've gone by for a VERY long time.

Here's how to authenticate me.

Hey GT - sorry, it's the rules.  I work around it with parenthesis.  Welcome to the forum.

TJ

Is your name actually Tom or is it Thomas? Not trying to be controversial but I think you get my point.

I apologize for taking everyone's time but if the name that I've gone by for decades isn't sufficient then I'm not sure this is the forum for me.

I understand that the idea is to ensure that people aren't hiding behind a pseudonym or "handle". I assure you that I'm not doing that.

I'm a forum junkie (GT Hill is my handle almost everywhere) and always try to be a good citizen. Let me know if I could be a good fit here.

You can do what TJ does and put your real first NAME ( GT ) Hill for example. Trust me, as you start to reply and use GT as your sign off and the shorter nature of GT, you will be referred to as such.

There must be a new surge going on. There has been a recent bout of individuals who have been very adverse to the whole real name thing. Seems to be a lot of new members joining who are not too interested in the idea. It's not just you. The rules are good though. Of the many forums I have frequented, this is the only one where even a well-deserved lashing is typically left with a very mild reminder that we are all assholes and some can stink more so than others. Some other forums I have been involved with don't always play so nice to even the most innocuous of situations.

I think the moderators need to consider the INTENT of the rule which I fully support. I'm not asking to be anonymous.

How many people shorten their "legal" name on this forum? Plenty. Tom instead of Thomas. Don instead of Donald.

My wife and step-kids call me GT. Fortunately my bio kids still call me "dad". :-)

I made the suggestion(s) I did because since Mac (a forum moderator) is the one who posted to have you update the Display Name to reflect your Real, Full Name, he is the one to whom you would need to present any questions. My comment re: gov't ID was predicated on "If that is your legal name, and your ID shows as such, then it'll be OK." There's another member here named Cosmo. That's it. And he has the ID to prove it.  [This is why I always say "Real Full Name," not "Real First and Last Name," since a Full Name does not absolutely require having both a First AND Last Name to be accepted.]

My *legal* first name is Raymond, and I really don't like it. I go by "Ray." I get your point re "Tom" versus "Thomas," and I think the answer is going to be "Well, if that's the name you go by and prefer," which raises support for your position of "I go by GT, everyone knows me as GT." That will, however, start the slippery slope of initials being used, and I believe the forum admins would not want that to happen.

When you reach out to Mac, or when he replies here, is there a safe middle ground (like TJ's "TJ (Tom) Cornish") that would be comfortable for you? Something that shows the bare minimum of meeting the Real Full Name policy while still highlighting the name you prefer? (And yes, as Luke mentioned, once you start participating and everyone sees "GT," you'll absolutely be known here as well only as GT!)

Just trying to help :)

If you're going to insist on this, then unfortunately you won't be a good fit for this forum as the full real name is the most hard and fast rule.  It's not going to change.  You can either abide by it as I do, or not.  It's totally up to you.

FWIW, I hope you do decide making a small name change is a small compromise to access this forum which is a great resource and has some great people.

Tom,

My frustration is that you guys are breaking your own rules. Raymond goes by Ray, you go by Tom (assuming Thomas).

I don't go by my first name for very personal reasons.

I have proven that GT is actually what I go by and I'm not skirting any rules like could be done. I'm not trying to be anonymous. I'm asking the forum to understand that "GT" is no different than "Tom" or "Ray".

I know there are great people and resources here. I hope to be a part of it if it can be accepted that I'm not trying to be difficult.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

I would certainly argue that "GT Hill" is indeed your Real, Full Name, given that it is what you are absolutely known by in the industry. From pervin' my way through the links that you posted... (an abandoned MISSILE SILO?!?)     not only do I not see you referred to by any other name, but it would indeed be confusing to refer to you by another name- your authority and expertise on wireless networks is all known from GT Hill.

Hopefully Mac or Doug will swing back through and render judgement... alternately, shoot one of them a PM and explain the situation. I'd hate to miss out on your expertise (as our industry gets more and more integrated with computers and networking, the ability to deploy a *secure* wireless network is a skill we're all having to master!) over this!

B.J. Honeycutt's name was BJ, named after his mother "Bea" and his father "Jay".

GT, just give in and spell out your name like TJ does... "GT (Geetee) Hill".
