UI24 dropouts with low voltage
« on: August 25, 2018, 01:15:05 AM »

Sheesh!  That was a nightmare.
At my twice monthly stage rental for outdoor an outdoor community music program, I talked the guy I work with to use my UI24, because the band was fairly involved and they wanted more than two mixes.
Unfortunately, the 6 DXR10s, 1 DXS12, 1 DXR15, three guitar amps, and a bass rig were all powered through 4 or 5 50' extension cords daisy chained.
After having a bunch of random PA dropouts, I ran home to get a UPS and a meter, and measured the voltage as low as 85 volts when things were hitting hard.  The UI kept dropping out and occasionally rebooting.
Then I inserted the UPS only to find it wasn't working properly.  AARGHH!
We ended up re-patching and running his analog board, which got us through the show.
That's what I get for trying to do a favor.  Face requiring egg removal. :-[

If you're doing this every 2 weeks, investment into a proper power source would seem to be  wise move?

I agree.  It's a summer series which is over now, so they'll probably ignore it.
I'm just supplying the stage, I don't do the sound.
I have suggested installing a quad box near the stage, but it's up to the park to do it.

Encourage the park Dept to install a 50 amp 120/240v outlet - like for an electric cooking appliance.  If they have to trench or do other dirt work the size of the circuit is nearly irrelevant.

If I were King for a day, I think that this idea might crack my top ten list.  All bars, pubs/restaurants, municipal band shells, and hotel ballrooms would be required to have a 50 amp "range plug" outlet within 75' of any possible performance location.  With today's highly efficient sound systems and LED lighting, you can do quite a lot with 100 amps and the cost to build power distros for that type of plug is very affordable.
