XLR connection pops fixed (but what was happening)
« on: August 12, 2018, 03:46:14 PM »

Just by chance, I used a cable I normally don't to connect a powered speaker.  It popped when the female end first started to mate.  It popped on every output on the patch bay I tried.  It otherwise worked normally once connectec. The ground socket was closer to the face for first contact, as expected.  I opened the shell and found a few ground wire strays.  I snipped them.
No more pops.
What exactly (probably) were the strays doing to cause the pop?

A quick guess was the were touching and thus grounding the connector shell.  Maybe?

Probably pin 1 was shorted to one of the other  two pins.  The cable will still work like this, but you'll be down 6dB and lose CMNR.

Thanks.  Makes sense.
