Projector Assistance
« on: July 31, 2018, 05:17:52 PM »

Have a local community looking to do movies in the park and are asking for assistance with the audio side of the event. I asked what the audio outputs are on there device they were using and they are not sure?  They asked if I could recommend a projector. Thought I would drop in here and ask. Projectors are not my wheelhouse as I would never have a span of 2 hours to watch a movie.  I suspect they are in the $500ish range. Taking a guess at this but suspectvthey would have an audience of ~200 folks on any given event. They said they have a screen selected and have no clue of the size. Distance from screen again a guess back row 50-60’??

Thanks A

$500 to rent?  That will get you an 8-10k Lumen projector which would handle a crowd that size, if it's a weeknight maybe less.

If you are talking purchasing you need to increase than budget 20-40x.  Keep in mind an OK projector for home that requires a dimmed room is over $1000.00

Audience size determines screen size. Screen size and type, ambient light, and projector type (1 chip or the chip DLP, 3LCD) determine brightness. Throw distance determines which lens.  Audio comes from the source or video switcher (or router), not from the projector itself.

Buying a projector, and lenses, and switching - is vastly more than $500.

It's hard to compete with the sun if it's a daytime event.

A 10.5’x18’ viewing area should be tall enough for general viewing (depending on the Aspect Ratio of the material).

If there’s very little ambient light, a 10k lumen PJ would be my minimum - 14k+ would be better. You can always turn down the lamp power on larger PJs.

First question is what format the movie(s) are on, if its a recent release, then it'll require DCP capable equipment, and this is specialist territory.  Call Boston Light and Sound.

If it's on BluRay, then any old BluRay player and any old projector will do, but the better the projector the better the movie will look.  The BluRay player of choice is an Oppo, now sadly discontinued, as it has the ability to suppress onscreen-menus, and be remote controlled, and has 5.1 audio outputs.

Sound: most "any old BluRay players" have a pair of phonos (RCA) for stereo out, and I'm sure you'll know what to do with those.  if you've got an Oppo or something with 5.1 outputs, then you can run L/C/R and stereo surround.

Officially, the dialogue, which normally should be -20 dbFS, should be at a level of measured level of 85dBC half way back from the front, though for many movies and audiences, that ends up way too loud.   Try to get the subs as flat to as near as 20Hz as possible.
