Just Lettin' Off Steam About Sennheiser....
« on: August 07, 2018, 12:40:18 PM »

Our church has a mix of Shure and older Sennheiser G3 wireless systems.  When we added video/computer graphics/etc. to the sound booth a few years ago, we found that the G3's were affected by HDMI (splitters).  Using HDMI would blow thru the squelch and make horrendous noise.

Well, we were able to fix all that by increasing the squelch and adding ferrite to all the HDMI cables.

Until this past Sunday.  I brought in my laptop to use vMix to stream the service.  I used a Magewell USB/HDMI capture device.

All of a sudden....BOOM!  Noise thru the system....popping...crackling.  Found it was coming thru the G3 for mic #2.  Not using it that morning so turned it off and problem solved.  Whew!

The Shures?  Quiet as a church mouse.

Thanks for listening to my rant.  Have a blessed day.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Hey - one person's rant might be another person's tip of the day.

I was working at a HoW with Sennheiser Wireless receivers, which would make the noises you describe - usually when the Transmitter had been out of range for awhile.  Hadn't though to look at the HDMI cables, but will send word to them into check that.

thanks for venting!

Are you using any HDMI baluns with CAT5 for extended length runs.

I have seen some of those along with un-shielded CAT5 cause issues on wireless mics if they were in close proximity to each other.

If I use a Cat5 HDMI extender in my house then the TVs all can't receive off-air.  HDMI signals are in the middle of the TV bands, which also means radio mic white spaces.  The signal level leaking from this stuff is much higher than the off-air signal.  So yeah, HDMI can easily kill off radio stuff.

No.  Straight HDMI cable runs.

I take back what I said before.

Yes, we do use a CAT6 HDMI balun to run a feed to another building.  We had to upgrade the first one as it was horrible with interference. (The pastor bought it off Amazon on the cheap.  You get what you pay for.)  The new one is much better (and was more costly).  We eliminated each HDMI cable and device one-at-a-time to see how each causes interference.
