big foam windscreens
« on: April 26, 2018, 11:12:13 AM »

Hi Folks,

What is available in large, foam windscreens?
Am looking for 48mm inside diameter or larger.
Windtech has the 20/421, though it is a bit longer than needed, and
the walls are about 19mm 3/4" thick, more than needed.
Am hoping I don't have to go with a fur mic-muff on this project.
Anybody have dimensions for the Shure A32WS?

Thanks and good health,  Weogo

Weogo,

I can't directly answer your question, but maybe steer you in the right direction. Try Markertek. They have all of that weird stuff.

How durable do these need to be ? One of my guys fabricated screens that we used on a pair of LDC’s outside in the 2017 season.  Hardware store foam and carefully stapled.  They look better than my description and the worked fine.  Where I am located Columbia River Gorge, self proclaimed wind surfing capital of the IS, maybe world...  I deal with wind all the time.

Hi Scott,

I did search Markertek, first I've heard of K-Tek windjammers.

Mal, these need to be pretty durable.
Do you have pics of your windscreens, and how they went together?

Riley, yep, I've been all over the Windtech site, and Rycote.

Further searching has turned up the MXL WS-002 which fits a 59mm diameter mic.
Also one for the Blue Yeti mic that says it is 60mm ID.

Thanks and good health,  Weogo

Making your own isn't that difficult, I've done it a few times for odd situations. Big open-cell foam on the inside (see if you know anybody who works with Meyer speakers), automotive headliner on the outside. I just sew the foam into appropriate sized tubes with needle and thread, doesn't look too Frankenstein if you're careful.
