Sort of..... but there's a "But"...

Normal filters have an effect on phase, which can introduce other artefacts into the system response, and these often get worse the steeper the slope of the filter.
If the phase curve is steeper, (as it will be with a steeper cutoff) it may be harder to line up that phase with the phase for the tops, so you could end up with an uneven transition there, possibly even to the point of an unexpected cancellation occurring - do you have the measurement gear and experience to correct for that?
Secondly, the changed phase behaviour can sometimes be audible itself, often referred to as "ringing".
In short, stick with Mark's processing unless you have the measurement gear and experience to do better yourself - in which case, you probably wouldn't be asking these questions in the first place.

Steve and David,
Thanks for those explanations

Hey now i am questioning something
i read that you can use smaller drivers ( 12's , 10's or even 8's ) in multiples, like 2 or 4 on a cabinet
that way you have more cone area, and distribute the power among the drivers

so instead of having a 600 bucks 1500 AES 15" high power driver you can use 2 12's or 4 12's
or 10's

1500/4 is around 375 so, a 375 watts driver is way less costly than those high power 15's and 18's

does anyone come up with some designs that use "budget" smaller drivers
but can manage the power for high output

just a thought
i do not if that is physically possible
or just plain break the laws of physics

A couple spring to mind.
Art Welter has released a plan for a dual 12 sub, freely available on Soundforums.net.
Commercially, JTR have their Captivator 212Pro which is generally well regarded too.
So, it's definitely possible, albeit still not very popular.

It's possible, but remember that 2x18" drivers have roughtly the cone area of four and a half 12" drivers, or six and half 10" drivers.

So you either need a lot of drivers, or drivers that maximize displacement with a large xmax rating, either way leads to larger cabinets (or more of them) and a driver cost that is probably close to that of the high power 18" drivers (cost of a B&C 18TBW100 is a bit less than the cost of x2 Lab 12s in Canada).

ic
so that lead me to square one
i could not find that double 12" from Art

FWIW: I own/built 4 of them.
Spenser
thanks for the link
that is Awesome!!
how are they !!
please share your impressions and toughts
also some tips if any on the build process, i am not skilled in anyway on woodwork
and friend of mine who build kitchen cabinets will help, but he never built sub cabs either
so i will be his co-pilot :D
