New LAB Subs?
« on: January 18, 2020, 06:21:32 PM »

Thinking back to the start of the Live Audio Boards Subwoofer sub-forum - the intention was a place to house and discuss sub plan(s) from LAB participants who desired to build DIY sub(s) that were Pro level.

A nice the original LAB Sub project is essentially archived due to newer technology drivers available now - does it make sense to have a limited number of additional designs?  Even if not revolutionary.  For example - front loaded small sub (dual 12"), horn loaded high output sub, horn loaded low extension sub, etc?  All designed around the newest generation of drivers rather than low cost, with a lower cost option that is "good enough"?

For example - Keystone sub.

The goal would not be to "reverse engineer" any subs, especially not ones Tom Danley is involved with commercially.

If a new poster wants to build something, based on what they are looking for, we could direct them to XYZ Amazing Sub Model ___.

Tom's "gift" of the LABsub design was based on his unhappiness with a commercial product that he felt was grandly and greatly overpriced based on the old school design and materials used.  Using McBean's HornResp he designed and modified his design, got Eminence to build the custom woofer, and the rest is horn history.

If others wish to contribute designs here I'm unaware of any reason they cant.

That said, the "pro" DIY speaker forum is over at Sound Forums dot net.  There is some cross-pollination of users between PSW and SFN (name folks here will recognize) and it's pretty small, cozy and friendly.

Caleb,

Considering there are many other locations where people can find DIY plans for almost any driver and cabinet configuration,  it does not make sense to add additional designs to this forum “Home of the LAB Subwoofer Project” that has not properly archived it’s namesake design, regardless of driver technology being 18 years old.

At 9 years old, the Keystone Sub

does not use the “newest generation” drivers, the Powersoft M-Force technology. For all I know,  another generation after the M-force may have been born in the last 7 years.

Tim,

In the interest of "horn history" preservation, pretty sure Tom Danley was using Akabak rather than HornResp back then.

I will defer to your recollection, Art.

Yes, I will concur that HornResp wouldn't have been involved in Tom's end of the design.  Perhaps AkAbak, but I think he was also still leveraging some proprietary software written in house at Intersonics.

But honestly, the design was largely just looking at the 'problem' from the Leach model of horn design.

[Tom started with the assumption that a driver of sufficient motor strength (and cone rigidity) could be made for a quarter wave horn.  The forum helped decide what was a good size for a manageable "unit" and then he figured out how to multiply that up to make a mouth big enough for 28hz.  It was designed for 6 boxes placed on the floor such that, with the mirror, the mouth area was equal to 12 boxes.  It's certainly not the hardest thing that Tom has worked out, which is the point that I think he was making at the time.  It also seems the project was way more popular than he expected. We're still talking about it today!]
