Outdoor projector screen
« on: January 12, 2018, 04:52:03 PM »

I have a client that is wanting to play movies in an outdoor park/beach setting. There is a structure that can be used to attach to...just wondering what options I may be overlooking.
Client mentioned possibly the large balloon inflatable type screens.
I'm wondering if something like the white stretchy spandex may work better. Less likely to blow around with the wind coming off the lake.
Sizewise, we're probably looking for something around 20'x12' maybe a bit smaller.
Suggestions?
Thanks. BJ

I used to rent one of the inflatables that had a 16' x 9' surface on it. It was actually fine in most winds up to about 22 MPH. This inflatable didn't have feet, but was held in place with guys at every corner. One person with a little experience could set it by themselves if necessary. Here in West Texas 10 MPH is a light breeze, so we got used to using it to it's limits, but I never had to cancel an event due to wind.

Mine was on of the Airscreen brand screens: https://www.outdoor-movies.com/inflatable-movie-screen/

Why not just paint the screen onto the structure?  It generates curiosity about events that utilize it, could actually be kept up by a sponsor and in all the years I've worked with them, I've never had one blow away!  You could get all technical with actual screen paint that might have a certain amount of gain to it, but a good flat white usually does the trick for the intended use.  Be sure to let your client know about licensed use for movies shown to the general public.

Thanks for the replies so far.
The structure is an open pavilion/ stage with a roof so no flat walls to paint the screen, but plenty of spots to attach.
The Airscreen unit looks nice but probably way overbudget for this client. Still thinking a large spandex piece might work. Anyone used it?

Call Rose Brand at ‎(800) 223-1624 and tell them what you want to do.
They have great customer service people and lots of different projection screen type fabric, including spandex in wide widths. Of course mention that it will be outdoors and needs to take into account the wind load.
Excellent service.
