Removing speaker grille foam
« on: January 07, 2018, 05:43:08 PM »

Will removing foam from the inside of speaker grills affect sound quality?

Case in point, I'm refurbishing 8 KF750 and kinda like the look of them without grills, but I need the grill to support the horn, so I was thinking about using them without foam on the inside.

I haven't tried this yet, the grills need a paint job first which I'm hoping to start on next week.

*Might* impact the dispersion of the higher frequencies.

I would suspect the grill itself would make a bigger difference than the foam.

Of course depending on the thickness and density of the foam.

All loudspeakers sound better without the grill-due to the blockage and backwards reflections that grills offer.

But then you have the protection of the drivers from the elements.

There are a number of tradeoffs regarding grills.

I find a lot of grills rattle when the foam is removed.  You will need a roll of foam weatherstripping to gasket everywhere that metal touches.  Then tap gently all around on it with a rubber mallet to find the rattles and add more foam if necessary.
