To each his own but, like I said, try over/over with 200' of coax and see how you like it.
The problem with over/over isn't how it's coiled, it's how people uncoil.
It should be done hand over hand to simulate a reel.

I have a friend who rolls all his mic cables on one of those orange Home Depot extension cord reels. He connects them all together on the stage and rolls it all up at one time.

I hate it...but he likes it.

I hate the knot thing too. It happens once in a while if I am in hurry and don't take the time to check before I unravel and then I get so frustrated, I throw the cord back in the case and start again- LOL
I agree if the velcro (or other) ties are pulled tight, it helps to keep the ends obvious and from being pulled through the donut hole.

That said, it's "almost" impossible to screw up if using unskilled labour.

I agree if the velcro (or other) ties are pulled tight, it helps to keep the ends obvious and from being pulled through the donut hole.

For extension cords and XLR's, I plug the two ends together on the outside of the donut after wrapping under/over and don't unplug them until I am ready to unwind them.  That keeps it from getting knotted.  With speakons, they don't plug, so I just tie them tightly like everyone else and unwind carefully at first.

I have three "reels"LINK
that I use for my xlr's; 2 reels for 25/30 foot cables and one reel for 50 footers.  I fit about seven 25/30's per reel on two reels and have four 50's on the 3rd reel.    All of my mic cables have the length written (25, 30, 50) on the male jack.
They work well for me however, if you are tech'ing an outdoor gig in the cold weather, they do become brittle..
