So this guy told me....

That you can't use rechargeable batteries if you put transmitters in bread pans to minimize IM while setting up.  "Reflects too much energy and kills the batteries."

Dis guy was from a national Broadway show tour.

Anyone have insight into this?

How about "Working on a national tour - Broadway or otherwise - doesn't make you immune from superstition or witchcraft."

100mW - AKA 0.1 Watts - isn't much energy, and I'm pretty confident the metal can of the battery is more than enough to reflect and/or absorb it.

Edit for a scale reference - 0.1 Watts = 0.341BTU = 0.086 dietary calories.

Maybe he's good at other aspects of his employment.

He was a thorough and hard worker, this A2.

With the relatively small amount of RF (<100mW) I'm not seeing how the chemical composition of the battery becomes a factor.  How does placing the transmitter in a foil pan alter the discharge characteristics of the battery, relative to its chemistry?  If it accelerates the discharge of LiOn or Nimh, would it not accelerate the discharge of a conventional alkaline cell?

Was dis guy using bread pans or not using rechargeables?

I was under the impression that pretty much every B-way show/tour was using the Powerx rechargeables these days.

Hence no whistling on stage and never mentioning "The Scottish Play" by name.

My experience is that the pans do shorten the run time of alkaline cells. Not tried it with Powerex.

Wow. I've been using trays for years and never noticed it affecting battery life...but then, I've been using the trays for so long I can't remember what life, battery or otherwise, was like before the pans. I will say that whatever the cost, the pans are worth it. Nothing quite like the little IMD farm that crops up when folks put a pile of Tx's on a table.

I should clarify this a little.
Not a dramatic change from 6 hours to 2, but it does seem to run down the battery meters faster then when they are deployed around the venue.
The trays are the only way to go with more than a few transmitters. It is amazing to watch the analyzer display when someone dumps a bunch of mics in a pile.

I would guess though that this is simply from the mic/beltpack working a little harder to find a signal?  When they're put into the metal tray and cut off from talking to their receiver, I'd assume they either change/up their transmit power a little to try and get a better signal (as a mobile phone does in a low signal area) or page/attempt to connect more regularly, and this is what drains the battery.

I doubt VERY much its anything to do with RF power being directed back at the batteries as the OP describes.
