Small sub for electronic drum monitor
« on: December 09, 2017, 12:15:48 PM »

I'm thinking of getting a 12" or 15" powered sub to use with an EV ZLX12p for an electronic drum monitor setup during practice. We just do amps and mic'd vocals.

I've been just using the ZLX12p or combined with our 18" sub, but that's a big speaker to bring just for my ekit.

The kit is a TD25 and I usually run it direct to speakers, rather than through our mixer.

As it's just for practice I would be looking at something very moderately priced, around $600+, and small and light.

There's the Alto subs, which are really affordable. I was also looking at the new EV ELX200 series and the EKX15 for a little more. Also the Turbosound Inspire series.

Yamaha DXS12 is too heavy for what I want, as portability is key in this case.

Looking for experience or advice.

You might consider the ZXA1-Sub -> 46 lbs.  I like mine.

Any chance a 15" 2-way speaker will do what you want? - You'd be able to replace the EV, and still only move one box.

Whats the point of electronic drums when you are going to make the same noise except trough a monitor?

Get inears and a buttkicker.

Could be and it's an option. But since I already have the ZLX12p, I figured a smaller sub could be used by the band instead of our 18 sub in smaller gigs where I might use the e-kit.

The point is they can be much quieter than acoustic drums and a much more controlled sound than my acoustic kit, particularly at practice when acoustics are bad.

Plus it's not just for me, it's for the band to hear them. Guitarists don't use in ears, and have no interest in paying for wireless ones. I use them but not wireless.

But even at some bar gigs the Ekit provides much more controlled sound. I prefer my acoustic, but in some situations it's too much.

Just want to give a big thumbs up to a drummer that understands the concept of playing at the right volume for the gig.

  • Trust me, it will be loud enough.

Yes yes yes, great sounding little sub. I have two. Use them a lot for small rooms. Not the most bang for the buck but great if you need compact.

ELX200 is about the same price, new model, more powerful, same dimensions, and weighs a few pounds less.

The EV ELX200-12SP does look good for the OP's stated purpose, with a few advantages over the ZXA1 sub. LP filter frequency choices 80, 100, 120, 150. -3dB point at 49 Hz rather than 53, 42 lbs vs 46, max SPL 129 dB at 1 m half space rather than 126, Bluetooth mobile app for DSP. Only downsides I see in the specs are 18 gauge grille rather than 16 gauge and the description does not mention internal bracing for the ELX200. Has anyone used or tried one?
