What clamp do I need?
« on: October 04, 2017, 09:57:45 AM »

I have a triangle truss from an ADJ light bridge system. I want to add a few moving heads. The clamps that were suggested look like they are for truss with larger diameter frames. Will this type of clamp work?

https://www.amazon.com/GBGS-Clamp-Lighting-Spotlight-Aluminum/dp/B013QUM6N4/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1507124999&sr=1-1&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_browse-bin%3A7103859011

If not what should I be looking for?

You are right that the ones linked won’t work if your truss isn’t 2”.

Check out Lightsource. They have some really nice clamps that can work on various pipe sizes. I have some that work on 1 1/2” - 2”.
Note that they are not cheap but given you only need 2 per mover and considering the cost of the movers and you get to use them on the next movers too...

For example, I would think that $50 for a pair of clamps for an $600 fixture a good deal.

Not sure what diameter your truss is, but this is a great clamp for smaller truss.

Global sells some junior O-clamps that span various diameters. IIRC, I have some that will handle 1.33" to 1.5" (34mm to 38mm) OD tubing. Besides small truss, I can use them on pipe and drape uprights, which occassionaly is convenient (watching out for light to drape clearance).

What size is the tubing on that truss system?

ADJ has a mini 0-clamp for 3/4" tubing.

Both Global and Chauvet(TrussT) have a unit for 35mm truss.
Here is one smaller unit from The Light Source:

Then there is this from Amazon:

Hi John,

If this is 35mm trussing and it has to be an O-Clamp, this is what I use.  I believe it is the same product Mark is suggesting.

If the moving heads aren't too big and O-Clamps aren't important, these are what I personally use.  The nice thing about this style versus the O-Clamp style is that you don't have to balance the moving head on your shoulder (or be safe and use a helper) while you tighten and things down and hook a safety.  This style is also more accepting of variable trussing size.  Good luck!

These clamps are manufactured specifically for the ADJ triangle truss:

https://www.amazon.com/American-DJ-Lighting-C-Clamp-Bridge/dp/B01GXSFABQ/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1507147167&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=adj+lightbridge+clamp

These also work, I think hold more weight, and you can pick them up at the local GC
https://www.amazon.com/The-Light-Source-Mini-Clamp-Black/dp/B001XWIRZE/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1507147253&sr=1-1&keywords=miniclamp

They also can be used on thicker diameter truss if you need, where the ADJ ones are pretty limited.

I would think those would really muck up the tubes over time and with an enthusiastic turn of the knob.

True.  The ADJ clamps though have a built in safety:  If you turn to hard, the plastic handle breaks off!

As a side, the Lightbridge truss also has spacers welded in the bottom with holes so you can bolt directly to the truss without clamps.  That may be the way to go.
