12awg or 14awg wire or it dont matter?

Here's what I'd do for your 110v plug:

Buy:
Qty 1 piece = NAC3FC-HC (Neutrik 32A PowerCon connector) link
Qty 6 feet = SOOW 12/3 Carroll cable link
Qty 1 piece = HBL5266CM2 Hubbell Insulgrip plug link

Assemble and be done. Should cost you around $50, maximum, if you pay full retail on stuff.

You're going to want the HBL5266EBK not the CM2, which has a smaller cable opening and doesn't fit 12/3 SOOW well. Both are all black. OQ Windsor has the best price on them that I've seen.

Buy the cable locally at an electrical wholesaler, the shipping will kill you.

Good call on the plug, Tim and you’re right OA Windsor’s Hubbell pricing is by far the best around. They’re about half as much as our local electrical wholesaler, and that’s even with a local discount.

Why would you omit the neutral on an L14 connector.
If using a 3 wire 240v, wouldn’t you use an L6 connector?

If your distro had a L14-30R that you were wanting to use with a 3-wire 240v device, the three wires used are L1, L2, and ground.  The neutral is not used.  It is of course not OK to omit the neutral wire of a device that the receiving end requires that neutral wire, but in this specific situation (2 years ago), Josh was needing a 4-wire (male) to 3-wire (female) adapter cable, which is fine.
