What fiber optic class?
« on: July 29, 2017, 05:46:00 pm »

What class do I need to take to learn how to build and test and maintain the type of fiber optic connections that we use in event production (i.e. not just audio, but also video, and lighting systems as well)?

Will this class by Light Brigade teach me all of those things?

Is it worth the $1,700 entry fee?

Your phone's camera will pick up the emissions your eye can't detect (plus it's not good to look at fiber).  One of the handiest fiber troubleshooting tips I know.

I hate to say it but 20 years ago when optics were finicky, connector termination difficult and fiber hard to handle special training was needed.

Assuming the install was certified maintenance and operation  are very straight forward.

Do you have any specific areas that maybe I can point you to some learning resources?

We want to install our own fiber for lighting and audio networks (Yamaha TWINLANe and Dante and whatever ETC uses) and run video from back stage to projector locations at FOH, or vice-versa and be able to terminate our own connections, at panel mounts and in racks.

We use preterminated fiber, it's easy to pull.  However crimp terminations are very simple to put on.

If you come to Cleveland I will buy you dinner and show you how to crimp fiber and test it in a day.

Is that the same basic method for assembling LC-duplex and OpticalCon connectors?

Are there panel mount versions that are just as easy?

ROFL, of course any of you folks are welcome to visit.  If we seriously are going to do this I need to get some consumables and put a little learning lab together.

I might drag you out on a gig though!

can any of you guys suggest a company making rugged/tactical OM2 fiber cable? my system goes from OM3 cable to OM1 cable with OM2 inside the racks between each patch point... I'd like to replace my nice opticalDUO neutrik OM3 snakes with OM2 to stick with digico spec.

apologies for piggybacking onto this thread.
