Point Source CM-i3 headset.
« on: June 12, 2017, 12:15:47 AM »

Hey guys wondering if you could point me into the right direction.  I purchased a PS CM-i3 production headset earlier this year.  Had it wired for clear com worked great.  Now, I've been freelancing with a company that uses RTS mostly.  So I had a 4 pin male to male XLR turnaround made hoping that it would work.  Most of the times I'm using a Telex BTR-800 beltpack, if I adjust the gain for the microphone people still cannot hear me.  My audio is great.  Isn't headsets wired the same between RTS and Clear com? If not, anyone know the wiring pinout?

Looks like clear com is:

1-Mic ground
2-Mic hot
3-Speaker ground
4-Speaker hot

Pin 3 and 4 are swapped on the RTS unit but shouldn't made a ton of difference. Make sure your turnaround is correctly made(possibly swapping pin 3 and 4) but that shouldn't effect the mic.

Can you confirm that the mic is indeed working with the clearcom system?

Check that the turn around is correctly made.

According to the BTR-800 manual an electret or dynamic mic is automatically detected and a bias voltage supplied if needed. This is the place I would start looking for potential problems.

The pinout is the same on the 4-pin connectors between RTS/telex and clearcom. If it is wired correctly it should work fine. I've used my point source headset with pretty much every comms system out there since I got it, and never had an issue. If anything, the problem was always that my mic was too loud compared to the standard headsets, and I had to move it away from my face a bit.

I would check the wiring in the adapter, as others have already mentioned. Over the years I have seen some clangers that can happen when folks put a male and a female XLR, or even just two xlr's in a clamp and then solder the wires identically instead of mirror image (or vice versa...). In this case, it sounds like it doesn't matter if 3 & 4 are reversed (would just invert the polarity of your earpieces from CC to RTS) but if 1 & 2 are reversed, the bias voltage for the mic would be inverted, which won't work with DC.
