I've never been sure what a "warmer" sounding effect really does. My thoughts are that it cuts the hi end or adds distortion. If it cuts the hi end then I might tend to boost the highs on the channel strip. Seems counterproductive.

I found that the old BSS 402 comps sounded "warm" but when I A/B'd the signal, there was more hi end when bypassed. It also sounded tighter for the same reason only it was the lo end that was cut. Personally I don't want my comps to make EQ changes to my signal so I sold them off before the bottom dropped out of the market.

I use the Neve EQ plugin on my piano mics.  I bypass the stock Yamaha EQ.  I swear its a smoother "warmer" EQ.

The stock Yamaha EQ is a standard "cookbook" filter EQ - you know, exactly the same as is found in countless DAW plugins which sounds absolutely fantastic when wrapped in a beatiful GUI/skin and sold at a high price, and less awesome when presented in a more everyday fashion.

Sounds like snake oil sold by golden-eared sheisters.

I use the CL5 every day and there is no need to "warm" it up. Also. The Neve EQ and Compressor plug ins are designed to be uber transparent. So any "warmth" somebody heard was all in their head.

I've been on the QL5 (same preamps I believe as the CL5), and the pres already sound pretty 'warm'. So, I agree... there's no need to warm it up any more. It's transparent, but smooth all the way through the frequency band. It's a very solid console as is. Any EQ or comp insert is going to add 'some' coloration, but I don't really see a need for it.

+1 . The CL's portico compressor is mondo transparent. I'll run the 33609-alike on the main bus, but more to keep things reigned in than for flavor. I don't know about the necessity of added warmth but there's an 1176 and an LA-2A in there that definitely have flavor.

If you think its warmer measure it, easy way to see whats happening.

From what I can tell warmer tends to be more even harmonic distortion, it might sound like there is less highs but I think it's more a matter of more mids, but not from eq, eq can't create harmonics only boost them.

Tubes don't sound like FETs and there is nothing an eq can do about that, Tubes can be emulated quite well these days but that is far more than just EQ, tubes are known to sound warmer(they are also warmer but I think that is mere coincidence)

Reminds me about smoke being the true secret to electricity, wonder how they keep it in the plugs if I forget to turn off the switch before I unplug.

So many questions...
