user names
« on: May 09, 2017, 12:58:02 pm »

I'm getting kind of tired of the constant correction comments (totally justified) about using your actual name.
Can't the sign up page have a HUGE note to say 'actual name required'?
It's getting ridiculous how much time is spent dealing with this when it could be nipped in the bud with three words.

Or is this a Blue M&Ms on the rider thing?

Agreed.

The wording for the "Registration Agreement" needs to change.

At the top, "USE your legal REAL First and Last name to create your username. Spaces DO work, also capitalize as needed for proper names.

Don't use "aw3s0m3_U5erName147" instead use: "John Smith"

Somewhere in the cobwebs, i think it was mentioned that not all sections require real names.
Don't know if this is still true.
Just a thought.

Registration does not require a real name and the same registration form is used across all aspects of the PSW site.  The requirement for a real name as Displayed Name is required for posting in the live forums; the recording forum allows pseudonyms.

And to be clear, it's not that a First AND Last Name is required; just your Real, Full Name. There are a few examples of people on here having a Real Full Name that does not include a last name. (And then there's Abdul-EQ, but he's so rare to grace us with his presence that I think we're all star-struck when he does!)

Yep.  When Cosmo posts it usually get a report but that's his legal name.  IIRC the mods requested proof which he supplied.

Abdul EQ is the phonetic spelling of his name.  There are probably more confirmed Bigfoot sightings than confirmed Abdul sightings...

I agree as well, though I'm not sure a simple language change to the welcome page would work.  Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed a trend between users that ignore this rule and the type of content they post.  They're either spambots, trying to sell or promote a random product, or are in fact real people but forgot to check their ego at the door and are seeking gratification for a purchase or idea they've already pursued without fully thinking it out (and then become offended when told otherwise).  No harm or offense intended towards anyone - just an observation that seems to come true in at least 50% of these cases.  That, and/or the people never come back.  The point I make though is that these users can't be bothered to follow the rule despite it already being plastered all over the boards, so I don't think another line of text would do any good.

Is there a way for the registration page to detect whether or not the "Name" field at least contains two strings of text with no numbers or special characters, separated by a space?  I know that can be easily fooled, but at least it's something...  I also know that you don't need to use your full name if you're just a lurker, so maybe set up the site to where a user's first post needs to be screened by a mod?  I know a few other sites use this technique, though it creates more work for the mod team however.

I still love the people who say
"I've been following the forums for years but never posted" but then have to get corrected on the name.
Really?!? If you read even a few threads you were bound to see people getting called out.

Not that I doubt Bubba, but I would want to see a birth certificate anyway.

My Dad occasionally worked with a couple of guys in America with some great names: Randy Bender, and a Richard (Dick) Swisher. They worked in the same office. I bet HR was laughing for months.

I was stationed in Vietnam with a guy whose real name was Moon Mullens. When he enlisted he didn't even own a pair of shoes.

There are people in mississippi that were given Bubba as their first legal birth name. And in south missippi where i was born a friend named his son Buddy. His legal first name on the b c is Buddy.

I forgot all about a kid named Richard Head. He went by Dick. During the first day of school we stood up and went around the room saying our name. He got sent to the principles office and we were told to call him Richard. There was also a girl named Gena Tailia(pronounced tail-ya).

I totally had a dream about this last night. Like, it had been so long since he'd logged on, that his account was being deleted. And then I created a new one, in his name, and everyone was excited he was "back." And apparently he had a code name of "Desert Fox."

I hate dreams. lol.
