I bought two used Monster Home Theater power strips to use in the gaming room I'm building for a kids. I plugged them into the wall at the house without anything actually connected and both of them are buzzing. Any thoughts on what that buzzing noise is? I only paid $5.00 for them at the local Goodwill...

Arcing? Dunno what is in them but unless there are some substantial transformers in them I would unplug them and put them in the bin...

Open them up and take some autopsy photos for us, then cut off the plugs and pitch them. If they buzz without any load on them, then likely at least one of the MOV's has shorted out from a voltage spike. I had one like that last year with a MOV shorted from hot to the EGC ground, and someone had cut off the ground pin on the plug since that was tripping the circuit breaker. Of course they were creating a hot-chassis condition that would be deadly.

Yeah - I opened one up and smelled the burn. I could also see a spot under the PCB board burned up. I didn't even bother to take the rest of it apart. Salvaged a nice 10ft piece of 12ga cable and a molded plug though.
