Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio HD
« on: March 24, 2017, 07:38:12 PM »

So who else is excited about this product but myself?  Anyone preorder?

3/4 of 1U and it is a video flypack in the palm of your hand.

I can't think of another product that can playback recorded content, de-embed audio from HDMI sources and be a decent switcher/scaler.

Am I missing something or is this all it seems to be at a ground breaking price point?

BlackMagic is doing some really cool stuff.  This looks great for $900; $1500 with the video deck in 1U.

It's a great time to be buying gear.  Mixing consoles finally broke in price in the last couple years; lighting desks and fixtures are starting to as well.  Video has been the last holdout - megabucks for switchers, cameras, decks, etc.  The ATEM series has been a good value for a while; the new stuff seems like serious upgrades.

I will say - it can't playback content....

I'm looking at a couple of these and some good up down cross boxes to cleanup video projection in a couple of our spaces...   the studio can hold 20 stills in its media store but no moving images.  Anyway I can order till I get new budget in July - but I am really excited for it.

Already bought and installed one of these at my new job.  Solid piece.

Only gotcha was there is no dedicated preview output.  You can of course use the AUX out for that, but it's worth noting.

Also note that none of the BMD switchers scale ins or outs. You need everything at one frame rate and resolution. And they only do 59.94 and 29.97, no 60.0 and 30.0 hz. Still a good bargain but those are the drawbacks. Plan on needing some Decimators or the like for certain computer inputs and projector outputs or anything else you can't control the resolution of.

Brian,  You got one already?  I thought they hadn't shipped yet?  Could you PM me?  I don't want to buy another Roland but I need one by the 10th if not.

I have to reread the specs, one of the talking points was the scaling (at least I thought)

I have one at our newest campus which I run sound at.

The cameras aren't fully setup so I haven't been able to fool around with it yet.

But it's there and it powers on.

&& yes, i'm excited about the price point and features. Ridiculous if you ask me.

ALL the BMD switchers require all inputs to already be at the same resolution.  They can handle a wide variety of resolutions, but won't scale anything.  It's the price you pay for the ridiculously low cost.
