Rackmount RTA/SPL/VU

I'm setting up a new club system with a medium-size line-array, and had a visiting FOH engineer show up Friday night with a Behringer Ultracurve DEQ2496 which he asked to insert inline between the console and my speaker controller. It actually worked quite well as a guest EQ and SPL meter, however, there was a lot of white noise inserted into my previously quiet system. Here's a direct link to the processor: http://www.music-group.com/Categories/Behringer/Signal-Processors/Equalizers/DEQ2496/p/P0146

I like the idea of a 1RU unit that can function as a guest EQ and SPL meter, but I wonder if the white noise was normal for this unit. It's pretty cheap at $300, so is there something else a little quieter for more money? Or should I consider this as just a cheap SPL/VU rack meter and keep it out of the signal chain.

FYI: The house console is an M32 with an RCF DX4008 speaker manager. It was super quiet until the DEQ2496 was patched in-line with XLR cables.

Any comments on this unit or suggestions for a better one?
