AES3 to Analog XLR
« on: February 09, 2017, 10:06:35 AM »

Hi all, I'm looking for a way to convert from AES3 to analog XLRs. I would come out of my Soundcraft snake AES to feed into the powered boxes I'm looking at getting. Currently I run AES3 from the snake to my Crown amps. Looking for a relatively "cheap" solution. I'm not interested in spending the $2k+ on some boxes I have seen out there.

Thanks

Not sure if you mean to to go from snake to amp rack via CAT5?
I use ETS PA202M and PA202F for exactly what you want to do.  About $135 each.

If you mean to convert from AES to analog (as in a D/A converter), I use RDL HR-DAC.

Should have clarified. Out of the snake on the stereo pair of AES3 output to 2 analog XLR. The RDlnet would work.
Thanks

Graham-Patton DAC-20 is a small affordable 1-AES to 2-XLR converter.

There are many good AES to analog XLR D/A converters out there, but if you will be using them outdoor in the summer, I recommend the RDL HR-DAC because of its extended operating temperature range.  I've used "home" type DACs like Emotiva XDA to studio units like Lucid 88192, and these things do not like hot weather.  They've all at times lost sync/lock when the temperature gets high.  The RDL has never missed a beat.  I also have them in a couple high school football field press boxes, where temp easily get up to 125F in the summer.

(Looks like someone has it on eBay for around $300...well below dealer cost.)

Unfortunately that's the wrong way. Everything that would fit my needs seems to be $500+

A little over $300.

If you have I-Techs or I-Tech HD, you can feed them AES 3 at either 48kHz or 96kHz.  Note that using the digital input increases the latency of the amp input as there is a non-defeatable sample rate conversion there.

edit PS... okay, I figured out you're moving to powered speakers without AES inputs...

Thanks Tim. I really wish these powered speakers would have that option by now of getting an AES signal. I have contacted the seller, fingers crossed he will ship to the great white north.

Hi all, I'm looking for a way to convert from AES3 to analog XLRs.

The info on the website is pretty sketchy, but I think the Behringer Ultracurve Pro will take AES in and give you analog out. $300.

Looks like there is only United States shipping available.

Come to think of it, the behringer dcx2496 xover will do it too.

AJA ADA4 does what you need.  2 streams of AES on XLRs to 4 channels of analog audio on XLRs.

https://www.aja.com/products/mini-converters/ada4

$390, but you get two streams.  Also goes the other direction, if needed.  Breakout cable is about 4'.

I forgot to ask...is there a problem with running your powered monitors off the snake's analog outs?

BTW RDL stuff DO NOT come with power supply.  Add another $20 or so for their AC adapter.

The problem is that I have a Soundcraft Mini Stagebox. It has 8 analog and 4 AES outs. I do some events where I need 6 monitor mixes, L&R main and L&R Delay or over flow areas. As you see I get up to at least 10 outputs and only have 8 analog outs. The AES into my Crowns works well and frees up analog outputs for other things.
Before purchasing the Mini Stagebox I took a hard look at the Compact Stagebox and really liked the option of choosing the output cards, the price tag on that stage box was more then the console though.

Looks like the dcx2496 will work. The DBX Venu360 will work also and offers 2 AES3 inputs. Decisions, decisions......
